Child hearing test

Hearing tests for infants, preschoolers and school-age children — matched to age

About the service

A child’s hearing can be assessed at any age, including in newborns. We choose the method according to the age and abilities of the young patient, so that the test is calm for the child and the result reliable.

No referral is needed for a child hearing test. If the result calls for it, the child can go straight to an ENT consultation at Sonar Clinic.

Who it’s for

  • Infants and small children — objective tests (otoacoustic emissions, ABR), with no participation required from the child
  • Preschoolers — tympanometry and otoacoustic emissions, ABR if needed
  • Children from around 6 years of age — play audiometry, tympanometry
  • Older children and teenagers — pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry
  • Children with recurrent ear infections, delayed speech development or difficulties at school

Scope

  • Otoacoustic emissions
  • ABR latencies and ABR thresholds (in the evenings and on selected Saturdays, by arrangement by phone)
  • Tympanometry, also with reflexes
  • Play audiometry (from around 6 years of age)
  • Pure-tone audiometry in older children
  • Paediatric ENT consultation after the test

When to test a child’s hearing

It is worth booking a test when a child often asks for things to be repeated, turns the television up loud, does not respond when called from another room, speaks unclearly or their speech is developing more slowly than in their peers. Recurrent ear infections, mouth breathing and snoring are also signals, as are worse results at school and difficulty concentrating.

In infants, the warning signs are no reaction to loud sounds, no babbling after 6 months, and not turning the head towards a sound after 9 months. We describe these signs in more detail in the guide My child keeps asking me to repeat myself — is it a hearing problem?.

What the test involves at each age

Infants and children up to about 3 years: otoacoustic emissions (a few minutes, can be done during sleep) and, if needed, ABR, which requires the child to be calm or asleep and takes 45–90 minutes. Tympanometry can be performed in infants as well.

Preschoolers: tympanometry and otoacoustic emissions, which do not require a response from the child, and ABR if needed. From around 6 years of age we use play audiometry, in which the child responds to a sound through play (e.g. putting a block into a box). The tests are carried out by an audiologist experienced in working with children.

Older children: pure-tone audiometry with headphones, as in adults, supplemented by tympanometry.

What happens after the test

The audiologist discusses the result immediately after the test. The most common cause of temporary hearing loss in children is middle ear effusion or enlarged adenoids — in that case the next step is an ENT consultation, available at Sonar Clinic for children too. In the case of permanent hearing loss, we discuss further diagnostics and hearing aid options with the parents.

Prices of the individual tests are listed in the price list. ABR tests are booked by phone, in the evening or on a selected Saturday, at a time convenient for the child.

FAQ

FAQ — Child hearing test

From what age can a child’s hearing be tested?

From the first days of life. In newborns and infants, otoacoustic emissions and ABR are performed, which require no cooperation from the child. Play audiometry is usually possible from around 6 years of age.

Is a hearing test unpleasant for a child?

The tests are painless. Otoacoustic emissions and tympanometry involve placing a soft probe in the ear for a few seconds, and play audiometry takes the form of a game. ABR requires electrodes to be attached to the scalp and the child to be calm or asleep.

How should I prepare my child for an ABR test?

The child should be well rested or sleepy, fed and calm; infants are best tested while asleep. We arrange the appointment by phone for the evening or one of the selected Saturdays, so that it fits the child’s daily routine.

Can my child have an ENT consultation straight after the test?

Yes. ENT consultations for children, including fibre-optic endoscopy, are provided at Sonar Clinic by doctors in specialty training in otorhinolaryngology and paediatric ENT. The hearing test result forms the basis for the consultation.
